How to Measure For a Violin/Fiddle
Violins come in sizes 1/32 thru 4/4.The 1/32 thru 3/4 sizes are for children. The younger violin student will need to change to a larger size as they grow. It's of great importance that the student plays the right size violin as fingers must be able to comfortably reach the strings and the arm must be able to hold the violin with out undue stress.
If the student is playing the correct size violin they will progress faster and find more joy in learning.
How to take an arm measurement:
Have the student put his left arm out to the side, as straight as possible with palm turned up.
Take the measurement from the bottom of the neck straight out to the palm of the hand.
End the measurement in the center of the palm
Round the measurement up to the nearest half inch
Use the chart below to determine the proper size
Measuring is the best way of determining the right size violin but we have included approximant ages for those who are unable to obtain measurements.
